How to read this chart. Each bubble is a business competing for attention in this market. Bigger bubbles mean more overall search visibility. The horizontal axis shows how many keywords a business ranks for, and the vertical axis shows their average ranking position (lower numbers are better). Businesses in the upper-right are ranking for a lot of keywords in strong positions. Businesses in the lower-left are barely showing up.

Richmond’s remodeling market runs along county lines in a way that affects every search result. Henrico County, Chesterfield, Goochland, Powhatan, Hanover, and New Kent each have their own permitting process, their own housing stock, and their own homeowner expectations. A homeowner in Mechanicsville is not the same buyer as one in Midlothian, and they don’t search the same way. The remodelers who rank in this market have figured out that showing up for “remodeler Richmond” is only a fraction of the opportunity. The real volume is in the community-specific, project-specific searches across each county.
Richmond also benefits from proximity to Washington, D.C. Homeowners relocating south buy existing homes and remodel them rather than building new. They start that contractor search online, often months before they move, comparing options from a distance. The remodeler with the strongest web presence across Richmond-area communities gets onto those shortlists without ever meeting the buyer in person.
With over 1,200 keywords tracked across this metro and nearly a third of
Richmond’s remodeling search results have a stronger competitive field than many markets, but no one controls it. The top three competitors combine for under 14% of total visibility, and the gap between them is narrow enough that a sustained push from any mid-tier competitor could reshuffle the rankings. One competitor that also appears in the home builder rankings carries visibility across both verticals, which shows the value of broad content coverage. Another competitor built strong positions specifically around bathroom and kitchen project types in certain counties.
The county-by-county pattern shows up clearly in the keyword leaders. Some remodelers rank well in Ashland and Hanover County but don’t appear at all in Midlothian or Goochland. Others have kitchen and bath positions but nothing for home additions or basement finishing. Directory sites fill the gaps. That unevenness is the opportunity: a remodeler who covers each project type in each county builds a search footprint that none of the current competitors can match.
Richmond’s steady housing market and D.C. relocator traffic make this a metro where SEO investment pays off over a long timeline. The positions you earn today keep producing leads next year and the year after. Our in-depth guide to remodeler SEO breaks down how to build that kind of compounding search presence, from the first pages you create to the ongoing strategy that maintains your lead.
These are real competitive markets where Floodlight has a client. The big orange bubble that's clearly winning is ours. Results are typical.
