Book Your Growth ReviewThis report is updated monthly. Visibility scores reflect a weighted formula based on ranking position and keyword volume. Data collected from Google organic search results. Floodlight SEO works with one client per vertical, per market.
How to read this chart. Each bubble is a business competing for attention in this market. Bigger bubbles mean more overall search visibility. The horizontal axis shows how many keywords a business ranks for, and the vertical axis shows their average ranking position (lower numbers are better). Businesses in the upper-right are ranking for a lot of keywords in strong positions. Businesses in the lower-left are barely showing up.

Overall search visibility score for each competitor. Higher scores mean more keywords ranking in stronger positions. Updated monthly.

Google's AI Overview consistently draws from a concentrated set of six sources when responding to queries about home builders in Grand Rapids, MI. Our analysis reveals that platforms like Houzz, YouTube, New Home Source, Facebook, Reddit, and Yelp mobile each appear in 100% of AI-generated responses we tracked. Since this represents just one month of data collection, these patterns reflect early observations that may shift as we gather more information over time. The current results suggest AI responses favor a mix of professional builder directories, social platforms, and user-generated review sites when addressing local home building inquiries.

AI Overview citations are highly variable. A single snapshot is unreliable, which is why we report persistence across multiple monthly observations. Persistent citation indicates durable authority that correlates with strong organic search performance.
When someone in the Grand Rapids metro decides to build a custom home, they start with a search. “Custom home builder Grand Rapids.” “New construction homes Ada.” “Home builder near me.” The builder who ranks first, with a solid site and real reviews, gets the inquiry. The one who doesn’t show up doesn’t exist to that buyer.
Most builders in West Michigan get their leads through referrals and trade relationships. That works until those channels slow down. A key referral partner moves on, the economy softens, or a competitor starts investing in search. SEO builds a steady pipeline of qualified leads that doesn’t depend on anyone else sending you work.
The Grand Rapids metro sprawls across a dozen communities, each with its own search behavior. Someone building in Ada is not searching “home builder Grand Rapids.” They’re searching “custom home builder Ada” or “builder near me” from an Ada zip code. The builder who has content for that specific community gets the call. Most builders in this market don’t have pages for any of these sub-markets. That gap is wide open.
The data on this page shows a market with no dominant player. The top competitor holds under 9% of total visibility, and the top three combine for just 16.6%. That kind of fragmentation means a builder who commits to SEO could move from invisible to market leader within months, not years.
Most of the builders ranking here are doing so almost by accident. They built a website, maybe put up a few project pages, and stopped there. The average positions in the mid-to-high single digits for top competitors confirm this. They rank, but without a deliberate strategy behind it. Meanwhile, 21% of the top positions in this market are still held by directory sites like Yelp and Houzz, which only rank because no builder has built a page to compete.
The first builder to put together a systematic content plan covering the full range of communities from Forest Hills and East Grand Rapids through Holland and Grand Haven will have very little real competition to overcome. We break down exactly what that plan looks like in our SEO playbook for home builders.
These are real competitive markets where Floodlight has a client. The big orange bubble that's clearly winning is ours. Results are typical.
